International Travel

The following assumptions are made for students planning to travel outside the United States while holding an F-1 or J-1 visa:

  • Students have maintained their immigration status.
  • Students’ information on their Form I-20 or DS-2019 is up to date.
  • Students have the intention of re-entering the United States to finish their course of study.

The following documents are required to travel and re-enter the U.S. while pursuing studies. Students on OPT, click here for travel guidance:

  • Active Form I-20 or DS-2019, which has been signed for travel by an ISC immigration advisor within one year prior to the re-entry date.
  • Valid passport for a minimum of six months beyond the re-entry date to the U.S. Exceptions may apply to citizens of countries that have an agreement with the U.S. allowing entry with a current passport up to the expiration date.
  • Valid F-1 or J-1 visa stamp on passport (except Canadian citizens). If visa is expired, students must follow the instructions to apply for the renewal of an F-1 or J-1 visa. If traveling to Canada, Mexico or Caribbean, click here.
  • Proof of full-time enrollment is highly recommended, but not required.
  • Proof of financial support is highly recommended, but not required.
  • Students may request a travel letter from an ISC immigration adviser by completing a Travel Authorization Request Form. Letter is optional and it takes 3 business days to process.
  • Students visiting a country other than their home country must ensure they have the required entry documents (e.g. visitor visa). Students are encouraged to plan ahead and contact the embassy for the country they plan to visit to learn about entry requirements.

Required documents for F-2 and J-2 dependents:

  • Active Form I-20 or DS-2019, which has been signed by the ISC immigration advisor within one year prior to the re-entry date.
  • Valid passport for a minimum of six months beyond the re-entry date to the U.S.
  • Valid F-2 or J-2 visa stamp on passport (except Canadian citizens).
