H-1B Visa Process

The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows U.S. employers to temporarily employ foreign workers in specialty occupations. Specialty occupations are defined as positions that require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a specialized field. The H-1B visa is valid for a period of three years and then renewable by an additional three years.

The University’s sponsorship of foreign nationals for H-1B visas is primarily reserved for faculty, researchers, and other scholars. The H-1B visa can also be used for appropriate full-time, permanent, professional staff positions. Determinations about sponsoring a foreign national will be made on a case-by-case basis after consultation with the University’s immigration attorney. Factors taken into consideration include the University’s need for the position, the permanency of the position, the foreign national’s eligibility for an H-1B visa, and the costs associated with the process.
